One of which was widely and extensively used was the 2013 curriculum in which all the aspects of learning has been provided inside of it. Unfortunately, teachers recently have neglected the importance of second language acquisition (SLA) in their activity. In this paper, the researcher investigated the relationship between SLA learning strategies with the newest revision of 2013 curriculum. The focus of the study was the curriculum document in the form of its lesson plan created by a teacher. The document was compared with O’Malley and Chamot’s topology of learning strategies (1990). The researcher also had an interview session with the teacher in charged in one of junior high schools in Ambal, Kabupaten Kebumen. The result showed that teacher didn’t consider the importance of SLA as the result of overwhelming administration duty. On the other hand, O’Malley and Chamot’s learning strategies is dominantly reflected in the curriculum. However, the well-support resources didn’t give much contribution to students’ achievement. Therefore, there should be evaluation and improvement from both parties involved in language learning.
2023-06-20T00:00:00+07:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Journalistics: Journal of English Teaching and Applied Linguistics https://journalistics.org/index.php/journalistics/article/view/34 An Analysis Figure of Speech in the “FROZEN” Disney Movie 2023-08-24T12:06:00+07:00 Eka Fanti Sulistyaningsih ekafanti@unan.ac.id Khoirotun Nisa khoirotun2408@gmail.com
This research is conducted in order to find out what type and the most dominant of figure of speech that used in”Frozen” movie. This article reports on a study aimed at investigating and examining features and functions of discourse markers used by an EFL teacher. This is a descriptive qualitative study within the frame of pragmatics. The data were derived from audio-video recordings gathered through direct observation. The audio-video recordings were transcribed and analyzed afterwards. In analyzing the data, Brinton’s (2008) framework of DM features was employed to figure out the DM features and the taxonomy of pragmatic functions of DMs proposed by Fung and Carter (2007) was used to examine the functions of DMs. This study spotlights two major findings. Firstly, the discourse markers found are in the form of adverbs, conjunctions, lexical phrases, and fillers, with the five most frequent DMs used are ‘OK’, ‘so’, ‘and then’, ‘now’, ‘and ‘and’. Secondly, the discourse markers perform pragmatic functions, namely interpersonal function (checking progress, partitioning information, replaying to elicitors, seeking affirmation, and signifying acknowledgement), referential function (marking results or consequences), structural function (opening the topic/subject or adjusting the lecture mode, maintaining the students’ attention, and smoothing shifts between activities), and cognitive function (denoting the thinking process). In short, the findings of this study might help to boost awareness of the pragmatic discourse markers for EFL teachers and learners.
2023-06-20T00:00:00+07:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Journalistics: Journal of English Teaching and Applied Linguistics https://journalistics.org/index.php/journalistics/article/view/36 The Effectiveness of Using Nas Daily Youtube Videos in Enhanching Students’ Speaking Skills 2023-08-24T12:19:28+07:00 Dwi Sulistyorini rini@akpelni.ac.id Endang Susilowati endangsusilowati@unan.ac.id Haryani haryani@akpelni.ac.id
This study focuses on improving students' speaking ability through YouTube videos of Nas Daily channel, specifically the students (henceforth, the cadets) of Politeknik Bumi Akpelni studying in the fourth semester. There are many graduates in Marine Mechanical Engineering Technology (TRPK) who often receive comments from companies that there are still many TRPK cadets that are less active despite being in the world of work. The international level requires active English, especially during interviews and communication with seafarers from different countries on board. This study aims to explore the importance of using Nas's daily YouTube videos to boost students' speaking skills. This study employs an experimental design applying preliminary and predomination in each group. The population consists of fourth-semester interns and the sample is class TRPK A as the preliminary group and TRPK B as a predomination group consisting of 22 interns in each group. The first meeting is an advance-test for both groups. The researchers give the treatment during the second and third encounters, and so on. Nas daily YouTube videos are used for the preliminary group while the predomination group is treated with conventional methods. The last meeting was an end-test of the preliminary and predomination groups. The research tools used consists of conducting a simple dialogue with the subjects they have learned. Learners' speaking ability is assessed based on five aspects of speaking skills, namely articulation, grammar or morphology, vocabulary or the stock of words, chapters and fluency. The results show that the average advance-test scores for the preliminary and predomination groups are 48.60 and 44.26. End-test mean scores for the preliminaryand predomination groups are 65.30 and 55.20. The average score of each of the 5 aspects of speaking also increased after using Nas Daily YouTube Videos for the preliminary group. The significance of this study is found by applying the t-test method. After carrying out the significance test, the t-count value (2.96) is higher than the t-table (1.76). This means that a significant difference in results between cadets’ speaking skills after being treated using the Nas Daily YouTube Video and using the conventional method of the fourth-semester cadets of Marine Mechanical Engineering Technology exists. This study concludes that cadets’ speaking skills improve well through activities using Nas Daily YouTube Video.
